Welcome
and Invitation
On behalf of
the Organizing Committee, I would like to invite you to
attend the Sixth European Conference on Marine Natural
Products (VI ECMNP) which will take place in the city of
Porto, Portugal, from the 19th to the 23rd
July 2009. The meeting will cover both traditional and
emerging areas of Marine Natural Products.
Porto is the
ideal location for the venue of the VI ECMNP, since it was
from here that ships set off in the discovery of new lands,
thus connecting Portugal and the World. Taking into account
that it was the Portuguese who were the first Europeans to
reach Thailand in 1511, this event will be part of the
commemorations to celebrate the five hundred years of that
arrival. Hence, to highlight this special occasion, HRH
Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol from Thailand has
graciously accepted to attend this conference.
Finally, I
would like to welcome you to this meeting to share the
knowledge and experiences in the research themes related to
Marine Natural Products with the other outstanding
scientists from Europe and other parts of the World which
will be attending. I also hope that, during this conference,
you will have an opportunity to discover the charming city
that is Porto.
We look
forward to see you at the conference.
Anake
Kijjoa
Chairman
of 6th ECMNP
Background
The VI
ECMNP will give continuity to the previous meetings held
successfully in Athens (1997), Santiago de Compostela
(1999), Munich (2002), Paris (2005) and Ischia (2007).
Due to their
potential for new drug discovery, their unique
structural/chemical features not found in terrestrial
natural products, and their role in the ecosystem - Marine
Natural Products have attracted the attention of scientists
from different disciplines the world over, such as Organic
Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Pharmacology, Molecular
Biology and Ecology. Hence, this conference will cover
various aspects of Marine Natural Products to provide
researchers opportunities to share their experiences and
information on the current research activities on the major
areas including; Structure Elucidation and Synthesis,
Biological and Pharmacological Activities, Biosynthesis,
Biotechnology, Ecology, Marine Toxins and Biomaterials from
Marine Sources.
Plenary and
invited lectures will be delivered by a forefront of
scientists from Europe, USA and Japan, who will contribute
by offering their vast experience and perspective in the
different scientific domains. Additionally one of the VI
ECMNP aims is to provide young researchers with an
opportunity to actively participate in the Conference, by
presenting their research work in the Posters sessions as
well as Oral Communications.
